WHERE WE STAND...
FOR:
Expanding shall-issue
concealed carry for citizens to all 50 states. A "shall-issue" permit means
that the state has to prove that the citizen is not legally qualified to carry a
firearm for self-defense, instead of the citizen having to prove that she or he
is legally qualified. Extensive studies by Dr. Gary Kleck and Dr. John Lott,
among others, make a very strong case for the armed citizen. Citizens who carry
for self-defense are better trained and better equipped than the average law
enforcement officer. Citizens who carry are also the most responsible among us;
the dire predictions of "wild west shootouts" have not come to pass in any of
the 38 states that now acknowledge the right of the citizen to defend self and
loved ones.
AGAINST:
Renewal of the 1994 "Assault" Weapons Ban. This piece of legislation was
responsible for the turnover of Congress from a Democrat majority to a
Republican majority in the election cycle following its passage. An "assault
rifle" is a rifle that is capable of being switched from semi-automatic to
automatic fire. An "assault weapon" is a political term that is used to describe
a firearm based solely on its physical similarity to an assault rifle - even if
that firearm is not a rifle. Since the ban was passed there has been no
noticeable difference in pre- and post-ban crime statistics. It is purely
cosmetic in nature.
